Emily Kowal ~ My Senior Story
When I started at Trinity four years ago, I was a clueless freshman. I had no clue where my classes were, forget about what I wanted to do with my life. However, once I slowly got my footing and ate a few cookies from the Cafe, the countless opportunities started leading me to the rest of my life. Like all freshman, I was bombarded with sign up sheets and free candy at the activities fair and stumbled into the Sailing Club booth. Somehow, despite never being in a boat I was sold and four years later I am now coaching. While I found a new passion and was still convinced I wanted to go to Oxford, I still had no clue what I wanted to do after high school. That quickly changed when I joined Trinity’s inaugural Mock Trial Team. I fell hopelessly in love with law, but still, I had no clue what I was going to major in for my undergrad. Once again, the opportunities at Trinity steered me in the right direction through its truly extraordinary International Baccaulrate program. While being a full IB student taught me many lessons, like not writing a 4,000-word research paper the night before its due and how to run on a minimal amount of sleep, it mainly taught me that I did not want to just study one subject, I wanted to learn them together. This coupled with IB’s global focus practically handed me my major wrapped up with a little bow: International Affairs. I have always had a passion for social justice, but with Trinity deeply rooted in the teachings of the Sinsinawa Dominicans, there was no way I would spend these four years without my sense of justice being sharpened. From discussions in Ms.Mcbride’s Peacmaker’s class and Ms. Klein’s Women’s Studies class to creating art to highlight social issues with Ms. Costello and Ms. Silunius, every class prepared me to be a global citizen. As I (hopefully) head out to George Washington University in the fall to study in the nation’s capital, I know I will be prepared. After all, Trinity fostered me to be the woman I am today- a leader who embodies knowledge, faith, and strength..
