Voices That Matter: Discovering and Preserving Stories Through Oral History

Through guided instruction and hands-on practice, participants will learn the full process of conducting an oral history interview—from crafting thoughtful questions to building rapport and listening deeply. Students will explore techniques for recording, documenting, and archiving stories, while also examining the neuroscience of memory to better understand how people recall and interpret their experiences. Along the way, participants will build valuable communication, research, and critical thinking skills that are essential for a wide range of future careers—from journalism and law to healthcare, education, and beyond.

Each day blends interactive lessons with practical application, as students practice interviewing skills, analyze real oral histories, and begin work on their own projects. By the end of the week, each participant will have created a recorded oral history of a cherished family or community member—a lasting piece of personal heritage that can be shared and preserved for generations.
