On Thursday, April 26th Mrs. Valerie Smetana’s 2nd period freshman English students spent the morning at St. Ladislaus School to help with their Reading Day. Trinity students were spread throughout the school and given 20 minute sessions to read with the children from Pre-K through 8th grade. The younger children were thrilled to work with the very cool Trinity students and the older children enjoyed reading their favorite books from when they were little. Mrs. Mary Egan thanked each of us for our participation saying, “You showed our students that you believe reading is important and more importantly that you believe they are important.” Trinity was grateful to have the opportunity!

Trinity’s Art Club took a trip to Belmont Village in Oak Park last week and did a painting workshop with the residents. The subject matter was flowers, and everyone had a great time creating art together and visiting with each other. The residents and students were trading paintings and stories by the end of the workshop. The results were amazing, and the Trinity Art Club members cannot wait to go back for another visit!

Some of the students reflected on their experience…

Sophomore, Jackie Trujillo: “People can really express themselves through art. I really enjoyed hearing the stories of their past, to hear their achievements and to talk about the silly things they did when they were younger. Art isn’t just art. It’s a form of connecting with others and communicating with them.”

Sophomore, Selena Gonzalez: “I had one of the most awesome experiences ever. We went to Belmont Village and painted with the sweetest people. I learned from Ken, ‘You just have to do it!’ I’m still excited about our visit and feel like going back more often. It was beyond wonderful, and everyone left with a big smile on their face.”

Junior, Laura Francisco: “I felt like I was helping and making connections with people I never would have thought to meet otherwise. I really enjoyed myself and cannot wait to go back!”

As part of their Full-IB requirements, thirty full-IB seniors completed their CAS Reflection Presentations on April 3. The CAS (Community, Action, and Service) requirement of 150 hours of community service, leadership, school involvement, and creativity takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship. The goal of educating the whole person and fostering a more compassionate citizenry comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their studies to assist others.

Sister Michelle was “truly awestruck” at the spirit of the crowd of almost 400 guests who attended Bal Dominique on Saturday, March 24, at the Drake, Chicago. This year’s event honored Sister Michelle as the Trinitarian Award Recipient. This prestigious award honors her as a leader in the development of skills for lifelong learning, an ethic of care, and a desire for excellence. Trinity has been blessed for 20 years with Michelle as president of Trinity High School. William Planek, Board Chair, says “Sister Michelle embodies the mission of Trinity as she labors tirelessly in the advancement of its mission.”

Sister Michelle’s Trinity journey began when she accepted a position on the first Board of Directors in 1990. Her presidency at Trinity began in 1992 when Trinity developed the first principal/president model. In 1994 the Board supported the decision to adopt the International Baccalaureate Program, followed by the Block Schedule in 1995. In 1996 the Technology Project was launched and with it the first major fundraising project since 1962. Trinity’s Athletics were commanding greater attention as the teams were progressing and growing. In 2003 the Sister Michelle Grmanson Athletic Facilty was constructed. In addition, in 2011 the Health and Fitness Center for Young Women opened.

For the past 20 years, Sister Michelle has shared her vision for Trinity. Her efforts are dedicated to educating young women to learn and grow to be their best!

“With this awesome mission, and in partnership with everyone, we have catapulted Trinity into the present moment! People stand in awe of all that we have been and all that we continue to be. Together, we are Trinity! Together, we have made an impact on the lives of our young women.” Sister Michelle Germanson.
