On March 1, 2005 Trinity High School held the annual Women
In Leadership Day. This year's theme was Women in Public
Service. For the past 10 years Trinity featured accomplished
women in fields such as public service, engineering, the
arts and medicine to name a few. Mary Dempsey Corboy, Chicago
Library Commissioner, was the keynote speaker along with
28 other women ranging from police women, firefighter, five
Illinois States Attorneys and Oak Park Village Clerk Sandra
Sokol. Eighteen of the speakers were Trinity alums including
Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy whose daughter Mary
is a senior at Trinity. Judge Kennedy was delighted and
honored to be part of the day. "It's such a great,
dynamic place," she said.
Dempsey
started the morning as keynote speaker by telling her Trinity
audience about the common bond they share. Dempsey is a graduate
of IHM High School and accredits where she is today with her
all girl catholic education. "A great deal of who I am
today I attribute to going to an all-girls high school."
Dempsey who has a master's degree in library science from
University of Illinois and a law degree from DePaul University
is currently on leave from the library board. Last month Mayor
Richard M. Daley asked her to take a six month leave to help
straighten out problems in the City Procurement Department.
After
the keynote speaker the girls broke into small groups by choosing
ahead of time which speakers the wanted to hear. "Most
of the women who come here to speak are enthusiastic about
their careers," added Sheila Scott, who is in charge
of the career program at Trinity. It was a great day with
students, alums and guest speakers together always learning
more.
