Trinity's Nunez Falls to York's Barry In Title Match

As reported in the Oak Leaves - A Pioneer Press Publication - October 17, 2007
By TIM STABLEIN Staff Writer

There isn't much gray area when describing how Amanda Nunez approaches the game of tennis.

The Trinity sophomore is all about hitting the ball low and hard, and placing the rocket shots in the corners.

There's another player, York junior Kelly Barry, who takes the same approach on the court.

The two similar styles clashed on Saturday afternoon in the singles title match at the Proviso West Sectional.

On that particular day, Barry came out on top with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Nunez

"I was happy with the way I played," Nunez said. "She took everything I hit and hit it right back passed me. She was really consistent putting balls in the corner. I hit some winners, but needed to cut down on my errors."

Second place was good enough to advance Nunez to the state tournament, which gets underway on Thursday, for a second-straight year.

"The two girls are very much alike," Trinity coach Mary Anne Lappe said. "Amanda loves to hit the ball hard and deep, and so does Barry. I told Amanda to change her game, but she never was able to do it. I told her to hit some slices down the line and change the pace of the match. None of that happened. Amanda will figure those things out. I thought she played OK even though she lost."

Nunez split her four matches at state last fall.

"I definitely want to do better," Nunez said. "I have to go out there and find my opponent's weakness fast. You can't hold anything back at state."

"It all depends on the draw," Lappe said. "You have to be at the top of your game."

Anna Hall won her first round match 7-5, 6-1 over Allison Korenchan of Walther Lutheran.

The competition was a little stronger in the next round where Hall fell 6-2, 6-1 against Fenton.

Jessica Garner and Colleen Grusecki opened with a straight set win over Leyden before losing 6-0, 6-1 to York's Kathryn Grimmer and Courtney Grob, who went on to finish in second place.

Danielle DuBois and Elizabeth Nelson lost 6-0, 6-0 in the first round to top seeded and sectional champions Liz Budnik and Amanda Budnik of York.

Nunez wins GCAC Singles Championship

As reported in the Oak Leaves - A Pioneer Press Publication - October 10, 2007

The scent of an upset at first singles was in the air after the opening set in the semifinal round match of the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Tournament had been completed.

Trinity sophomore Amanda Nunez, who was the top seed, was able to win only one game in the opening set.

Nunez lived up to her top seed the rest of the way and rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Azaiea Garcia of St. Ignatius.

"I think she just got tired from sitting around having to wait for the match," Trinity coach Mary Anne Lappe said.

There was no thought on an upset in the finals with Nunez winning 6-3, 6-2 over Molly Montgomery of Loyola Academy.

It was the second first singles title for Nunez.

Trinity sophomore Anna Hall placed fourth at No. 2 singles, losing the third place match 6-2, 6-4 against Meghan Noth of St. Ignatius.

The Blazers also had a second-place at No. 3 doubles where sophomore Danielle DuBois and senior Elizabeth Nelson lost 6-3, 6-2 against the top seeded team from Loyola.

The Trinity duo pulled off an upset in the semifinal round with a come-from-behind three set win over No. 2-seeded St. Ignatius. There wasn't any drama in the first round with a straight-set win over Gordon Tech.

The No. 2 doubles team for Trinity of Maggie Landa and Colleen Grusecki finished in fourth place after losses to top seeded and conference champion Loyola in the semifinals and Regina Dominican in the third place match.

The first doubles team for Trinity of Olena Stasula and Jessica Garner lost a three-set match in the opening round to Regina.

Loyola won the GCAC title with 38 points, St. Ignatius second with 26 and Trinity third with 22.

The Blazers will compete in the Proviso West Sectional on Friday and Saturday in Hillside.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to the state meet, Oct. 18-20, at Prospect High School.

Nunez is looking to advance to state for a second straight year in singles. The other singles player for the Blazers will be Hall.

Lappe said Stasula and Garner, along with Landa and Grusecki, will be entered in the doubles bracket for Trinity.

The other teams in the sectional field are York, Fenton, Morton, Elmwood Park, Leyden, Proviso East, Walther Lutheran and Fenwick
