Our JV Softball Team has been busy these past few days. Over the weekend in the cold and rain they had a double header against St. Francis Wheaton.

In the first game our defense rallied around Sophomore Alicia Marchetti who pitched her first game of the season and won 11-8. Freshman Gianna Coduti was 4 for 4 with a solo homerun shot in the first inning. She also had 3 stolen bases and 2 RBI’s.

In the second game the win went to Sophomore pitcher Becca Madormo as the team rallied behind her to beat St. Francis 10-6.

Yesterday, the JV Softball Team played in the first round of the GCAC Red Tournament where they were seeded 3 rd. Their opponent was the Wolfpack from St. Ignatius.

In true Blazer fashion they sent the Wolfpack back to their den with a 13-2 victory in 5 innings. Again our winning pitcher was Becca Madormo who struck out three batters in a row in the top of the 5 th inning to retire the side and get the win.

Big sticks by the team and smart base running helped the Blazers score big. Triples were hit by Sophomore Jessica Chappell and Freshmen Gianna Coduti and Lauren Urso. Extra base hits didn’t stop there as Sophormores Karina LaBarbera and Emma Jolliff-Blake and Freshman Megan Bura hit doubles. It was a beautiful day and a great win for our JV Softball Team as they advance to Round 2 of the GCAC Red Tournament.

Congratulations JV Softball on a great victory!

The energy level for the Trinity softball team had been very low for almost three weeks. The Blazers came out of their midseason funk on Saturday, sweeping past Regina Dominican 11-1 and 19-4 in a pair of five inning Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Red Division games. "We finally played like we're capable of," Trinity coach Bob Osborne said. "It's the best we've looked since Mother McAuley (April 8). When we play like this consistently, we are one of the best teams in Class 3A." Lauren Wambach, Laura Eichenold, Annie Logisz, Monica Albano and Emily Landa each had a pair of hits for the Blazers, while Vivi Castellanos had three RBIs. Trinity continued to pound the ball with authority in the second game. "I tried to turn it off," Osborne said. "Everybody in the lineup in that game had a hit." The top three hitters in the nightcap for Trinity were Erin Baldwin (3 hits, 2 RBIs), Albano (2 home runs, 4 RBIs) and Annalis Matta (2 hits, 2 RBIs). The Blazers picked up an unusual win on Friday with a 7-2 decision over Walther Lutheran in a nonconference game. Walther packed up its equipment and left the Triton College field after three innings. Some of the players were in a school play that evening. "At least we got a few swings in," Osborne said. "I didn't think they would just quit. We could have finished the game with JV players." The Blazers used their speed to steal seven bases in three innings and scored three runs on wild pitches. "We have a ton of stolen bases this year," Osborne said. "This is the quickest team I've had." Trinity scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning with the lone RBI credited to Castellanos. Three runs were added in the second inning to extend the lead for Trinity to 5-0. Logisz had a run-scoring single, while Wambach and Matta both scored on wild pitches. The final two runs in the third inning came on a two-run home run over the left-field fence by Castellanos.

April 4
Our JV softball team battled the rain and the cold in true Blazer fashion on Thursday, April 3rd in their game with OPRF.

Sophomore pitcher Claire Cusack pitched a great game holding the Huskies to only 2 runs going into the 7th inning. Outstanding defensive plays throughout the game by Sophomore Jessica Chappell and key catches made in the outfield by Gianna Coduti and Lauren Chin were key throughout the game.

Tied 2-2 the Huskies had 2 on base when Sophomore Becca Madormo came into the game to try and shut down the offense of OPRF. They put up 5 more runs before Trinity was able to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 7th inning Freshman Gianna Coduti came up to the plate and hit a lead-off double followed by a walk by Sophomore Jessica Chappell. That set the stage for Sophomore Karina LaBarbera who hit a clutch double to drive in Gianna and Jessica. It wasn’t enough though as the JV team came up short losing to OPRF 7-4 in the 7th inning.

It was a great game as our JV Softball team cheered on their teammates and did not stop fighting until the last out of the game. The JV softball team’s overall record is now 2 wins and 3 losses.

Trinity sees four-class system a benefit

By TIM STABLEIN

The four-class system in the state tournament has the complete support of Trinity softball coach Bob Osborne. It's easy to understand why Osborne is thrilled beyond belief to be in Class 3A for the 2008 state tournament. The Blazers will no longer have to worry about getting past neighborhood rivals Fenwick and perennial state power Oak Park-River Forest just to reach the super sectional. The decision by the IHSA to expand to four classes form two came at the right time with Trinity having the talent, at least on paper, to improve upon last year's 22-8 overall record. "I really believe we are a top10 team," Osborne said. "Now we have to go out and prove it." The Blazers won a Class AA regional title a year ago and lost to OPRF in the sectional semifinals. Osborne expects Elmwood Park, Ridgewood, Riverside-Brookfield and Fenton to be the top teams along with Trinity in a sectional field when the pairings are released down the road. "I think we have a shot to get downstate," Osborne said. "It all depends on match-ups and staying healthy. I have to get the girls to believe we can do this. Last year we were rebuilding. This year we are rebuilt." Another change for the Blazers this spring will be competing in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) Red Division for the first time. Resurrection is the preseason favorite in the division. Trinity played in the GCAC White Division in the regular season a year ago and placed first with a 5-0 record. The Blazers played in the postseason GCAC Red Division Tournament and finished in fifth place. Trinity was the runner-up in 2007. "We play a lot of the Red Division teams every year," Osborne said. "The Red Division is a lot harder. We have to go in there and prove we can compete. I think we can win it if a couple rolls go our way." The top player returning for the Blazers is junior Monica Albano, who was the GCAC White Division player of the year last spring. Albano, a three-year starter on the basketball team, hit .567 last season with nine home runs, 10 doubles and 10 triples. She will play shortstop again this season. "I believe Monica is the best unknown player in the state of Illinois," Osborne said. "Around here people know about her. I think she's the best player in the area outside of pitchers. I would like to see anybody who can field or hit any better than Monica Albano." The Blazers are more than just Monica Albano. Another standout for the Blazers is sophomore catcher Laura Eichenold, who will bat leadoff again this season. She had a great rookie season, hitting .495 with 36 runs scored, 52 hits and 21 stolen bases. Junior Erica LeCoure and freshman Erin Baldwin will battle it out for the starting job at first base. The entire outfield returns for the Blazers with junior Annie Logisz, and sophomores Taylor Golden and Amanda Ramirez. Logisz hit .409 with 26 RBIs and 33 runs scored last spring, while Ramirez finished at .350 with 14 stolen bases and 21 runs scored. Sophomore Vivi Castellanos can play second base or in the outfield, while senior Lauren Wambach returns at third base. Junior Cora Tassone is another candidate for an outfield job. The Blazers hit .358 as a team in '07 with 17 home runs and 85 stolen bases in 94 attempts. "We're going to score a lot of runs," Osborne said. "Last year was my best hitting team ever, and I think we will be even stronger and faster this year." Trinity also returns experience in the pitching department, which is a must-have to even think about making it downstate. Trinity will rely upon juniors Emma-Leigh Strock and Emma Landa to get the job done inside the white circle. Strock was 15-7 with an ERA of 3.20, while Landa had seven wins to go along with an ERA of 2.50.
