Concordia Chicago’s Marche Smith Joins Women’s 1,000 Point Club
Jan. 5, 2010 – Concordia University Chicago women’s basketball player Marche Smith ( Oak Park, IL – Trinity H.S.) added another milestone to her list of basketball achievements last week when she scored the 1,000th point of her career in a Dec. 29 road win at Concordia University of Austin, Texas. She became the seventh player in Concordia women’s history to reach this plateau, joining Amy Gibson (1,243), Atoi Sinclair (1,235), Tammie (Dunker) Driver (1,172), Laura Kohrs (1,137), Ellie Bravo (1,121) and Kim Schumacher (1,071). Smith has the distinction of becoming the fastest of the seven to reach the plateau, ringing up her thousand in just 58 games. Already the Cougars’ record holder for most points in a game (42) and a season (502), both feats accomplished last season, Smith’s 1,034 points and career 17.2 scoring average put her on pace to break Gibson’s career points’ record before the end of this season. “ Marche is an excellent player in every aspect of the game, but she has an especially great ability to score points,” said Concordia head coach Joshua Steffen. “She loves to drive the lane, but she is equally adept at hitting the three or hurting you from the free throw line. Opponents may take away one part of her game, but she will find a way to beat you some other way. “ Marche is a remarkably talented player who performs at a consistently high level which is why she’s reached 1,000 points so quickly. She is also a great teammate and even better person, and all of us will be excited to watch as she closes in on the career record.”
