About This Play

T. S. Eliot’s historical drama in verse depicting the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170 today may be read as a spiritual allegory expressing the themes of honor, responsibility and faith. The play was written for production at the Canterbury Festival in June of 1935 as the winds of a horrific war were beginning to stir. Perhaps at that pivotal moment in time Eliot’s aim was to heighten the urgency of maintaining deep personal convictions, as illustrated by the great medieval English saint, no less than is required of us in the 21st century. In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of this unique play’s first performance, we are proud to present our adaptation to Trinity’s community of administration, faculty, staff and students.
