IB Seniors Perform Dramatic Reading
The IB English seniors took on the task of performing an adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s historical drama in verse, Murder in the Cathedral, on Sept. 13 during periods 1 and 2 in the Trinity chapel. Invited to the dramatic reading were the administration, faculty and student body. Filled with imagery, allusions, and complex language, the play depicts the martyrdom of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury , in 1170 and is told in two acts and an interlude. Written for the Canterbury Festival in June of 1935, the play is an allegory about honor and faith, themes which still ring true today, seventy years later. This unusual acting opportunity gave the students an authentic audience before whom they could practice their oral skills and dramatic interpretation of a challenging text. While the day was hot and humid, the students’ creative efforts were undiminished! The class really appreciated the presence and support of all those who attended.
