THS Physics and IB Film Studies teacher John Reid Perkins-Buzo wrote and directed "The Tortilla Moon," screened on April 9-10th at Facets Cinematheque as part of the 21st Chicago International Latino Film Festival. The screening was sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which makes it eligible for an Academy Award nomination for 2006.
It won the Jury Award for Animation at the 8th International Latino Film Festival, San Francisco (November 2004), and showed in Orlando's International Digital Media and Art Festival (March, 2005).
In the final years of the 19th century, the Mexican government fought a running war with the Yaqui Indians. The war ended with the deportation of the Yaqui from Sonora to the Yucatian. The Tortilla Moon tells the revelation of the Spirit of the Moon to a Yaqui girl, Maria Sewa.
