IB Biology Group IV Project

Combining the IB Senior Biology class as well as the IB Junior Chemistry class, the annual Group IV project allows for a significant exploration of the biological and chemical aspects of a given topic. This year the students decided it would be of interest to test the water qualities of the Des Plaines River.

On October 18 th, students decided to take advantage of the early dismissal to begin the collection and testing of water samples. With waders, a net and empty water bottles at hand, students were split into groups. Under the direction of both Mrs. Roberts, Trinity’s IB Biology teacher, and Mrs. Westfall, Trinity’s IB Chemistry teacher, some students went to Thatcher Woods while others went to a North Riverside location. At each location students were once again divided into groups. Each group was responsible for obtaining water observations and samples from different depths. Many of the samples were successfully attained with the help of brave seniors, Sreeja Nair, Catherine Weyand, and Victoria Kolbuck who entered the unknown water territory for the sake of Group IV. Testing is still being done and will be completed by early December.
