Volleyball News & Notes

November 4th vs Regina
The varsity volleyball team defeated Regina 25-16, 25-16 to earn a spot in the Sectional Championship on Thursday night. The Blazers’ offense was led by senior Caroline Brander, with 13 kills and 5 blocks. Senior Sam Lula added 5 kills and junior Vivi Castellano had 4 for the match. Sophomore Jamie Purl tallied 16 assists and 6 digs. The defense was led by senior Annie Logisz with 21 digs and 2 aces. Also contributing to the Blazer defense was junior Denise Nelson with 8 digs and senior Amanda Iuliano with 5 digs for the match.

The team would like to extend their gratitude to all the Blazer fans who cheered them on to victory! Your energy was amazing! Be sure to come out to support the team as they play Walter Payton this Thursday at 7:00 in the Sister Michelle Germanson Athletic Facility.

November 1st - Trinity Named Regional Champions
Congratulations to our varsity volleyball team who earned the title of Regional Champions on Saturday, Nov. 1st! The Blazers defeated Chicago Jones in two games, 25-3 and 25-23. Orchestrating the offense was sophomore setter Jamie Purl with 18 assists and 6 digs. Senior middle hitter Caroline Brander dominated throughout the match with 15 kills, 4 aces, and 16 service points. Seniors Sam Lula and Ciera Hester-Smith, and junior Vivi Castellano also contributed 4 kills apiece. The Blazers defense was led by Annie Logisz with 12 digs and 2 aces. Amanda Iuliano contributed 9 digs and Denise Nelson had 8 digs and 13 service points for the match. This Tuesday, the Blazers will face off against Regina Dominican at 7: 00 in the Sister Michelle Germanson Athletic Facility. Come cheer on the team as they compete to earn a spot in the sectional championship!

October 29th vs. Noble Street Charter
The Blazers defeated Noble Street Charter in their first round of IHSA state playoffs on Wednesday night 25-2 and 25-10. Leading the Blazers was senior Caroline Brander with 14 kills, senior Annie Logicz with 7 digs and 7 aces and sophomore Jamie Purl with 20 assists. Senior Ciera Hester Smith and junior Vivi Castellanos also contributed offensively with with 4 kills each, while Denise Nelson had 8 digs and Amanda Iuliano had 6 for the match.

Oct. 9 vs. DeLaSalle
The Blazers defeated DeLaSalle on Thursday night 25-23 and 25-18. Leading the Blazers to victory was Caroline Brander with 12 kills and 4 blocks, Shelby Vcelka with 16 assists and 6 digs, and Annie Logisz with 11 digs and 15 service points. The Blazers wrap up their regular season conference play at home this Monday night against Mother McAuley. Congratulations to the team for earning a #3 seed in the regional tournament! 

October 6 vs. St. Joseph

The Varsity Volleyball Team defeated St. Joseph 25-12 and 25-8. Senior Caroline Brander led the blazers with 5 kills, 5 blocks, and 5 aces. Junior Shelby Vcelka tallied 12 assists for the night.  Senior Ciera Hester Smith and junior Vivi Castellanos contributed 4 kills each, while  senior Annie Logisz had 9 digs during the match.
The JV Volleyball Team defeated St. Joseph 25-15, 25-12. The Blazers were led by Katie Vilanova who had 9 assists, Rachael Jolliff-Blake who had 3 kills, and Annie Larsen who had 3 blocks. Congratulations!

Freshman Volleyball The Freshman Volleyball Team played at St. Joe's winning 25-18 and 25-8. Mary Rauh had 3 aces, 4 digs and a solo block. Bitta Pacer had 18 aces! Keisha Helm had 4 kills and 2 digs. Also MK Marino had 5 kills and a dig. We are so proud of our girls and hope that this win will carry us to victory against Regina today!

October 2nd vs Maria

Thursday night the Varsity Volleyball Team defeated Maria 25-11 and 25-7.  Leading the team was Tatiana Cooper with 7 aces, Caroline Brander with 6 kills and Shelbey Vcelka with 4 kills and 6 assists. The JV Volleyball Team defeated Maria last night 25-5, 25-6. The Blazers were led by Katie Vilanova who had 21 points off serve and 7 aces. Congratulations Ladies!

September 27 - 4 Team Tourney
Saturday, the JV Blazers played in a 4 team tournament at Trinity. The Blazers finished second out of four teams. The Blazers played a great game in the semi-finals, defeating WhitneyYoung 25-18, 21-25, 15-12. The JV team then lost to Resurrection in the finals 13-25, 15-25. Theoni Richardson had 32 digs and Nancy Samatas had 28 digs during the tournament. Megan Podkowa had 19 kills, Annie Larsen added 17 kills on the day. Congratulations to the JV team on their second place finish!

September 26 vs Fenwick
Friday night, the JV Volleyball Team lost to Fenwick 19-25, 18-25. The Blazers fought hard, but simply did not have enough to finish the game. The Blazers were led by Nancy Samatas with 11 digs and Annie Larsen who had 10 points off serve.

The Trinity Freshman Volleyball Team defeated Fenwick on Friday! In the 1st match of the evening, the Trinity Blazers played a hard fought match against the Fenwick Friars last Friday. They lost the first game 17 to 25 but a stupendous comeback and won the 2nd game 25-22. The third game was a nail-biter. It was close, but the Blazers dominated the Friars by winning 25-23. Catherine Buseum did an amazing job with 11 kills, 14 blocks and 9 digs. Bitta Pacer had 9 assists and 11 digs. MK Marino had 9 kills and Monica Scizeskza had 9 kills. In the second match, the Blazers fought amazingly hard but lost. However Lizzie Brown did an awesome job with 9 digs and and Hannah Brown did well with 6 assists. We are so proud of our Freshman girls and are looking forward to a win on Monday against Queen of Peace.

Sept. 23, 2008 vs. Guerin
The Varsity Volleyball Team defeated Guerin Prep on Tuesday night 25-13 and 25-11. Leading the Blazers to victory was senior middle hitter Caroline Brander with 13 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs. Junior middle hitter, Tatiana Cooper, contributed 3 kills and 2 blocks and junior outside hitter, Vivi Castellano, had 3 kills. The defense was led by senior libero Annie Logisz with 8 digs and junior defensive specialist Claire DiGioralomo with 7 digs and 2 aces. Sophomore setter Jaime Purl tallied 10 assists and junior setter Shelby Vcelka had 8 assists for the match.

The Freshman Volleyball Team beat Guerin Prep not once, but twice! In a match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes. Our Blazers had a hard time shaking the Gators losing the first game 25-18 and then fighting back to take the next two games 25-23 and 25-23. It was a total team effort in which our freshmen focused and made smart team decisions to pull out the win. In the second match of the evening the freshmen team did much better winning 25-13 and 25-21. Excellent serving from Hannah Brown, Kaitlin Nissen and Lizzie Brown was the key to securing the victory in the second match. Congratulations Freshmen Volleyball!

And now…calling all Blazer fans! Mark your calendars—this Thursday, Sept. 25 th. Our Freshmen Volleyball team will be hosting the Resurrection Bandits in the Sr. Michelle Germanson Athletic Facility. Come on out and give a cheer for our freshmen! Games times will b 5:00 and 6:00.

Also, I’m sure you’ve heard by now and have seen all of the signs that Friday, September 25th our Varsity, JV and Freshman Volleyball teams will be playing Fenwick. That’s right—Fenwick! The games will be played at home. The Freshman and JV matches are scheduled to start at 5:00 and the Varsity match is at 6:00. We need everyone to come to the game this Friday. Let’s pack both gyms with Trinity Blue and White.

September 13th

The Varsity Blazer Volleyball team made a strong showing the Resurrection Bandit Tournament on Saturday.  After defeating Zion-Benton (21-12, 18-21, 16-14), Northside Prep (21-11, 21-13) and Nazareth Academy (21-18, 18-21, 16-14) in pool play, Trinity advanced to the playoffs. They lost a close semifinal match to Resurrection (25-20, 19-25, 13-15) and then to Nazareth (18-25, 25-20, 8-15) in the consolation game. Leading the Blazers for the day were two seniors, Caroline Brander with 50 kills and 33 blocks, and Annie Logisz with 87 digs and 5 aces. Also contributing to the team’s performance was junior Tatiana Cooper with 24 kills and 15 blocks, junior Vivi Castellano with 10 kills, and senior Ciera Hester Smith with 9 kills for the day. Junior Shelby Velka tallied 68 assists, while senior Amanda Iuliano had 35 digs and junior Denise Nelson contributed 32 digs. The Blazers have a big week ahead with a Tuesday night match against rival Regina Dominican and a Thursday night match against Red Division St. Ignatius.

The JV volleyball team finished fourth in the competitive St. Ignatius tournament Saturday. The girls played excellent matches, defeating Whitney Young in one game and defeating Regina Dominican in two games to advance to the semi-finals. The Blazers played well against St. Ignatius, defeating the home team in the first game, however they they lost the next two games. The Blazers played Loyola for third place and lost in two games. Freshman setter Katie Vilanova set in all of the matches on Saturday and did an excellent job. Nancy Samatas and Jackie Robinson also served well over the course of the matches. Good Job JV!


September 11, 2008
vs Mt. Assisi
The JV volleyball team played an excellent game yesterday! They defeated Red Division Mt. Assisi 26-24, 25 - 14. Jamie Purl ran the Blazer offense and recorded 11 assists. Rachael Jolliff-Blake also played an excellent game and had 5 kills. Annie Larsen added 5 digs and played well in the front row. The Blazers are currently 3-1 and will play in a competitive tournament at St. Ignatius this weekend. Good luck!

In their second Red Division Match of the season the Freshman Volleyball Team split with Mt. Assisi. The opening match was a nail biter as the Blazers lost the first game 19-25; and won the next 2 games 25-18 and 25-19. It was an exciting match and a great victory to a packed house. Key players in the match included: Middle Hitter Catherine Busam who served up 6 service aces; 3 kills; and 4 solo blocks. Libero Taylor Lang who has 2 service aces and 7 digs in the back row. Setter Hannah Brown who has 3 service aces and 5 assists, and Middle Hitter Marikate Marino who had 9 kills and 4 service aces. The second match was just as exciting. The Blazers lost the match in 2 games, but not until taking Mt. Assisi to the brink with a score of 24-26 in the second game. In this match: Kelly Sorrentino had 3 service aces and 2 kills and Kaitlin Nissen had 4 service aces and 1 assist. Congratulations to the Freshman Volleyball Team for 2 very exciting and outstanding matches last night. The Freshman Volleyball team’s record in the Red Division is 1 win and 1 loss and their overall record is 5 and 3.

The Freshman play at home next Tuesday September 16th in a GCAC cross-over match with Regina Dominican. Mark your calendars now and come to the game to support our Freshman Volleyball Team!

Sept. 9, 2008 vs. SFDS

The Varsity team defeated St. Francis DeSales Tuesday night 25-5 and 25-4. Caroline Brander led the Blazers with 12 kills and 7 aces. Shelby Vcelka had 18 assists, Vivi Castellano and Ciera Hester Smith contributed 4 kills each, while Annie Logisz added 8 digs for the match. The JV Volleyball team won their match against St. Francis DeSales last night 25-8, 25-9. The Blazers were lead by Nancy Samatas who recorded 16 points off serve and three aces, and Megan Podkowa who had 9 points off serve, six aces, and five kills. Congratulations!

Sept 6, 2008

The Varsity Blazers made a strong showing in the Latin Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, taking home second place. Undefeated in pool play, the Blazers overpowered Walther Lutheran (25-13, 25-11), Woodlands Academy (25-12, 25-9), Latin (25-9, 25-11) and Luther North (25-9, 25-4). Despite a well-played final match, the Blazers fell to Walter Payton in the Championship (25-16, 19-25, 20-25). Led by the hitting of Caroline Brander (13 Kills, 13 blocks), the serving of Denise Nelson (16 total service points, 7 aces) and the defense of Annie Logisz (12 digs) the Blazers put up a valiant fight to the finish .

Leading the Blazers in overall performance for the day was senior middle hitter Caroline Brander with 35 kills, 28 blocks, 5 aces and 5 digs. Junior middle hitter Tatiana Cooper contributed 13 kills and 12 blocks, senior outside hitter Ciera Hester-Smith had 13 kills, while junior outside hitter Vivi Castellano had 8 kills for the tournament. Junior setter Sheby Vcelka had a solid performance with 79 assists in 5 matches. Defensively, senior libero Annie Logisz, provided strong support in the back court with 44 digs and 5 aces. Special recognition goes to junior defensive specialist Denise Nelson, who led the team serving for the day with a total of 51 service points and 13 aces. Great job Blazers!

Sept 3 vs. Loyola Academy
The Varsity team won their first conference match of the season against the Red Division Loyola Academy. After dropping the first game 21-25, the Blazers turned the tables on the Ramblers and never looked back, defeating them 25-16 and 25-16. Shelby Vcelka directed the offensive attack with 21 assists for the match, while senior middle Caroline Brander led the Blazers in all around performance with 13 kills, 8 blocks, and 16 digs. Junior middle hitter, Tatiana Cooper, added 6 kills and 3 blocks. Senior libero Annie Logisz played outstanding defense with 12 digs and also led the Blazers in serving with 3 aces.

The JV Volleyball Team lost their match against Loyola last night 21-25, 17-25. The Blazers played excellent defense during the match but came up short. The JV team was led by Nancy Samatas and Jamie Purl who both served well. Nancy and Jamie also recorded six digs each over the course of the match.

The Freshman Volleyball Team suffered a tough loss against Red Division rival Loyola Academy losing both matches in 2 games. You’ll get them next time Blazers!

September 2
The Varsity Blazers Volleyball Team opened their 2008 season in an exciting non-conference match against St. Viator.  After trailing in the first game,13-20, Trinity regained momentum and fought back to win 28-26. The Blazers then went on to take the second game of the match, 25-22.  Junior setter, Shelby Vcelka, led the offensive attack with 13 assists. Senior middle hitter, Caroline Brander, dominated at the net with 11 kills and 3 blocks, while junior middle hitter, Tatiana Copper, added 4 blocks. In the back court, senior libero, Annie Logisz, led her team with 16 digs and also 3 service aces for the match. Also noteworthy of recognition was the serve receive and defensive play of Amanda Iuliano.

The JV Volleyball Team won an exciting match against St. Viator last night 19-25, 26-22, and 26-24. The game was a great team effort! The JV Blazers were led by Annie Larsen who had 6 digs and Nancy Samatas and Jackie Robinson who played strong defense in the back row. Congratulations on a great first win!

In their season opener the Freshman Volleyball Team split with St. Viator’s. The opening match was a nail biter as the Blazers won the first game 25-16; lost the second game 11-25 and came back to win the 3 rd game of the match 25-18. It was a great victory to a packed house. Key players include: Bitta Pacer had 3 kills; 4 assists; and 5 service aces. Marikate Marino had 5 service aces and 3 kills, and Catherine Busam added 6 kills for the team.The second match was just as exciting. The Blazers lost the first game 11-25; won the second game in a huge comeback 26-24; and in a fight to the finish lost the 3 rd game of the match.In this match: Kathryn DiGirolamo had 1 kill; 3 assists and 5 service aces. Mary Feller helped her team out with 2 kills. Congratulations to the Freshman Volleyball Team for 2 very exciting and outstanding matches last night.
